Botox Q & A

What is Botox?

Botox is an injectable drug that is most well known for its cosmetic use in treating wrinkles. The active ingredient in Botox works by temporarily disabling your muscle movements. Because of this mechanism, Botox can be used as a treatment for many conditions caused in part by uncontrolled muscle contractions.

Surprisingly, the active ingredient in Botox is the same toxin that causes a type of food poisoning known as botulism. Despite this, the medical use of Botox is very safe when injected in very small concentrations by a trained professional.

What can Botox treat?

Botox has a growing list of medical uses. Your provider may recommend Botox injections to treat:

  • Facial wrinkles and lines
  • Eye twitching
  • Other bothersome muscle spasms
  • Chronic migraine
  • Crossed eyes
  • Urinary incontinence
  • Excessive sweating

It may take up to five days after your injections to notice any results, but most patients see a difference in 24-72 hours. If you have other concerns or conditions that could benefit from Botox injections, your provider will discuss them with you further.

What are the side effects of Botox?

Botox is generally safe and major complications from the drug are very rare when it’s administered correctly. Some temporary side effects that may occur are:

  • Swelling
  • Discomfort
  • Redness
  • Watery eyes
  • Dry eyes
  • Headache
  • Crooked facial expressions

These mild side effects aren’t harmful and usually go away within a few days to a week. If you have trouble breathing, speaking, or moving, you must call your provider or seek medical attention as soon as possible.

What should I expect after my Botox injections?

After your Botox injections, you’re free to go home and continue your day as usual without taking extra time to recover. You should avoid rubbing the injection points to keep from spreading the substance to other areas of your body.

The results of your Botox injections will last for a while, but they aren’t permanent. Depending on the condition that you’re treating with Botox, your results may last for three months or more. If it works in treating your condition, you may book additional injections to maintain your results after it wears off.

Wrinkles on your face and other conditions caused by overworked muscles can affect your confidence and wellbeing. To find out if Botox is the right treatment for you, call SCN Dermatology or book an appointment online today.
